Clean Power

Alternate energy

Burning coal, oil, and gas is the single largest source of greenhouse-gas emissions. Switching to renewable sources is the most powerful lever we have. Two of the leading ideas:

IDEA 01

Solar Power

Solar panels (photovoltaic cells) convert sunlight directly into electricity. They have no moving parts, produce zero emissions while running, and have become roughly 90% cheaper over the last decade.

  • Source: The sun delivers more energy in one hour than humanity uses in a year.
  • Where: Rooftops, parking lots, and large utility-scale solar farms in sunny regions.
  • Trade-off: Doesn't generate at night, so it's often paired with batteries.

IDEA 02

Wind Power

Wind turbines use giant blades to spin a generator and produce electricity. Modern turbines are taller than the Statue of Liberty, and a single one can power roughly 1,500 homes for a year.

  • Source: Uneven heating of the Earth's surface creates wind — a constantly renewing resource.
  • Where: Open plains, coastlines, and increasingly offshore where winds are strongest.
  • Trade-off: Variable output and visual/wildlife impact require careful siting.
